Day 4 -- What's it like

Day to day, this is what I deal with:

~Each day consists of 4 to 8 finger pricks to check blood sugar
~Each day consists of 4 to 5 insulin injections into my tummy depending on any high blood sugars to correct for (minimum of 4 shots per day though)
~If I am low I feel shaky and slightly panicked
~If I am high I either feel nothing or will get a headache and my energy will drag
~Carb counting for every meal and snack
~Remembering to bring my insulin with me!!
~Resisting my favorite food group most of the time
~Expensive prescriptions for insulin (2 kinds) and testing strips
~Frequent doctor visits
~The "stress factor"--living with something that will never go away...something I can't take a break from...something that could kill me if I choose to ignore it

All that being said, I am so grateful to be living with diabetes now instead of then. God has blessed our family with great benefits through Nathaniel's job and great medical care. I'm not complaining, just familiarizing my readers with an insider's perspective.

  1. Hi Lisa. A friend of mine told me about your blog. I am 28 weeks along in my first pregnancy. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes a week and a half ago. It is so overwhelming! I hope that you continue to post (and keep in public). I think it may be really helpful. I don't have to do insulin injections right now and hope that I don't have to at all, but only time will tell.
